Proof Aloud
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 17 August 2026
The short version
Proof Aloud records your voice and keeps it on your phone. Your recordings and transcripts are never sent to us: the app has no account and no login, and nothing you say is ever uploaded anywhere. The only copy of a recording that leaves your device is one you choose to make, into your own Google Drive.
If you buy a subscription, that purchase is handled by Google Play and checked through our billing provider, RevenueCat. They see that a purchase happened. They never see a recording, a transcript, or anything you said.
We collect nothing. No analytics, no advertising identifiers, no crash reports, no profile.
If you delete the app's data, it is gone immediately, and there is nobody to email.
Who we are
Proof Aloud is published by WickedSelf LLC, a Delaware limited liability company.
WickedSelf LLC 2810 N Church St #578615 Wilmington, DE 19802 United States
Privacy questions: Support@wickedself.com. That address reaches the people who make the app.
What the app records, and where it stays
Your voice. When you answer a gate, the app records audio and writes it to its own private storage on your device (the archive_audio folder inside the app's sandbox, which no other app can read). It is transcribed on your device by Vosk, an offline speech recognizer bundled inside the app. No audio and no transcript is uploaded. There is no cloud transcription service involved at any point, and no human at WickedSelf can listen to anything you record.
What you type. If you type an answer instead of speaking, the text is stored the same way, on the device only.
Your entries, prompts and streaks. The prompts you answered, your transcripts, dates and streak counts live in a database inside the app's private storage.
Which app is in the foreground. To know when to raise the gate, the app reads Android's usage-access signal for the name of the app currently in front. That value is read, acted on, and discarded in memory. It is never written to a file, never transmitted, and no history of which apps you opened or when is kept anywhere. The app also never records when you closed an app, by design.
Your settings. Blocked apps, unlock duration, theme, and similar preferences are stored on the device.
What we collect
Nothing.
WickedSelf receives no personal information, no analytics, no advertising identifiers, no crash reports and no usage statistics from this app. The website has no signup form either: testers join a Google Group themselves, so their address stays between them and Google. There is no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, and no crash-reporting SDK compiled into it.
The app talks to exactly two places on the internet, both listed in full below, and neither of them ever receives a recording or a transcript. There is no server of ours anywhere in the picture, and no destination the app could send your voice to even if it tried.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising or any similar purpose.
The two things that use the internet
Optional backup to your own Google Drive. If you turn backup on, the app signs you in to Google and writes your entries into the hidden application-data folder of your Drive account. The permission requested is drive.appdata and nothing else, which means the app can only see files it created there and cannot read anything else in your Drive. Those files sit in your account, not ours. We have no access to them and no ability to read them. You can unlink at any time, and Delete everything removes the backup along with the local copy. Google's handling of your Drive account is governed by Google's own privacy policy.
Purchases. Subscriptions are processed by Google Play Billing and verified through RevenueCat, a billing provider we use to confirm that a subscription is genuine and still active. The app is told only whether an entitlement is active. Card numbers, billing addresses and payment details never reach the app and are never visible to WickedSelf. Google is the merchant of record and its privacy policy governs the transaction.
RevenueCat receives the purchase itself and a randomly generated identifier for your installation. It is a random identifier, not an account: the app has no login, so we do not ask you who you are and could not tell RevenueCat even if we wanted to. It never receives a recording, a transcript, or any part of what you said. RevenueCat's own privacy policy governs what it does with that purchase record.
Separately, Google Play collects data about installs, crashes, and purchases for every app on the store, independently of anything the app does. We see only the aggregate reports Play provides, which do not identify you to us.
How long anything is kept
On your device, for as long as you keep it, subject to the free tier's rolling seven-day archive window. We keep no recordings or transcripts anywhere off your device, so there is no retention schedule of ours for them to be subject to. If you back up to Drive, those files persist in your own account until you delete them, in the app or in Drive. Purchase records held by Google and RevenueCat are kept under their own policies, for as long as they need them to honor a subscription you paid for.
Security
Your recordings and entries sit in the app's private storage, which Android isolates from other apps, on a device you control and, in most cases, encrypt with a lock screen. Data sent to your own Drive travels over Google's encrypted transport. No system is perfectly secure, but the material risk here is your phone rather than our infrastructure, because we do not have any infrastructure holding your content.
Children
Proof Aloud is intended for a general adult audience. It is not directed at children, it is not enrolled in Google Play's Designed for Families program, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13, because it does not collect personal information at all. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, write to Support@wickedself.com, though in practice there is nothing for us to hold.
If you are in the United States
We do not sell or share your personal information as those terms are used in the California Consumer Privacy Act, and we do not process it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We hold no personal information about you, so requests to know, correct, delete, or opt out have nothing to act on. The equivalent controls are in the app, in your hands: Export everything and Delete everything, both immediate and both requiring no request to us.
If you are outside the United States
The same answer holds. Because your content stays on your device, there is no international transfer of your personal data to us, no profiling, and no automated decision-making. Where data-protection law gives you rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, or objection, the in-app export and delete controls satisfy them directly and immediately. If you believe otherwise, write to Support@wickedself.com.
What this app is not
Proof Aloud is a screen-time and habit tool. It is not a medical device, not therapy, not treatment, not counselling, and not a mental-health service. Nothing in it is a diagnosis, a clinical assessment, or advice from a licensed professional, and it is not a substitute for care from one.
The app watches for language suggesting distress so it can quietly offer crisis resources. It does that entirely on your device. It does not record that this happened, does not flag or label you, does not build any profile of your mental state, and does not notify anyone. There is nobody watching on the other end, and no one is alerted.
If you are in immediate danger, call 911 (or your local emergency number).
If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is free, confidential, and available 24/7 in the United States: call or text 988, or chat at [chat.988lifeline.org](https://chat.988lifeline.org/). Veterans can press 1 after dialling
- 988. You can also reach the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741. Outside the United
States, [findahelpline.com](https://findahelpline.com) lists services by country.
Permissions, and why each exists
| Permission | Why the app asks |
|---|---|
| Microphone | To record your answer. The audio stays on the device. |
| Usage access | To see which app is in the foreground so the gate can appear. Not logged, not sent. |
| Display over other apps | To draw the gate on top of the app you opened. |
| Notifications | Android requires a visible notification for the blocker to keep running. |
| Ignore battery optimizations | To stop Android freezing the blocker while your phone is idle. |
| Internet | Only for the optional Drive backup, and for verifying a subscription if you buy one. Never for recordings. |
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and material changes will be noted in the app's release notes. The current version always lives at https://proofaloud.com/privacy.
